Hello, I am happy you are here. My name is Irais.
I recently completed my Master of Counselling and Art Therapy at Adler University. My approach is grounded in authenticity and shaped by my own lived experiences, which guide me in creating a space where you can show up just as you are without judgment.
In our work together, I strive to create a space where you can slow down, breathe, and connect with what’s really going on inside. We might use both art and talk therapy to make sense of your experiences, whether through creative expression or honest conversation, we’ll find what feels most natural and meaningful to you.
Whether you’re navigating a life transition, seeking deeper self-awareness, or simply looking for a place to breathe and reconnect with yourself, I’ll meet you with warmth, empathy, and genuine curiosity as we uncover your unique path toward healing, growth, and your most authentic self.
Below are some common questions about my work and approach.
Questions & Answers
What inspired you to become a counsellor?
My journey into counselling and art therapy began during a really challenging time in my life. After having surgery and spending a long stretch in recovery, I faced a lot of unknowns, physically, emotionally, and mentally. During that time, art became my outlet. It helped me express what I couldn’t always say out loud and brought a sense of calm when everything else felt uncertain. I was also lucky to have a therapist who supported me through that period. Their guidance and empathy made such a difference, and it opened my eyes to how powerful and healing therapy can be. That experience, along with what I discovered through art, showed me the deep value of creativity, connection, and support. It’s what inspired me to become a counsellor and art therapist myself, and it continues to remind me why this work matters so much. My heartfelt intention is to offer you a sanctuary, a space where you feel completely safe and supported to express your truest self, however that looks and feels. Whether you find your voice through words, through the vibrant hues of creativity, or through a beautiful blend of both, I’m here to walk alongside you on that journey.
What has being a counsellor taught you?
Being a counsellor has taught me the beauty of slowing down and truly listening…listening not only to someone’s words, but to the emotions, hopes, and fears that sit quietly beneath them. It has shown me how much strength can emerge from moments of vulnerability, and how deeply healing it can be to feel genuinely seen, accepted, and understood. This work has reminded me that growth isn’t a race or a straight line. It unfolds gently, at its own pace, when compassion and patience are present. I’ve learned that meaningful change often begins with the smallest steps, and that offering a safe, warm space can make all the difference.
Who do you call in through your work?
Through my work, I warmly welcome anyone who’s ready to feel more at ease in their own skin: youth, adults, Spanish-speaking folks, and highly sensitive individuals. I hold space for the tender, human struggles I know well from my own journey: anxiety, perfectionism, learning to set boundaries, rebuilding self-worth, navigating big life transitions, and untangling relationship patterns. If you’ve ever felt alone with those weights, know that I’ve carried them too, and I understand how life-changing it is to finally have someone truly see you, listen without judgment, and walk beside you as you find your way forward. My practice is a soft place to land for all identities, backgrounds, orientations, and belief systems. Wherever you are right now is exactly where we begin, and together we’ll move toward the peace, confidence, and connection you deserve. You’re already welcome here.
What is your cultural background, and how does it shape your work?
I was born and raised in Mexico and moved to Canada when I was fourteen. This experience has given me a deep appreciation for how culture shapes identity, values, and relationships. This perspective allows me to approach counselling with openness, curiosity, and respect for each person’s unique story. I invite you to share your own cultural background and experiences in our sessions, as these are important parts of who you are. By understanding your perspective, I can better support you in a way that feels meaningful, affirming, and tailored to your journey.
How do you approach spirituality in your work?
I was raised in a religious household, and that foundation has given me a lifelong source of strength, comfort, and hope, especially when life gets challenging. At the same time, I’ve come to believe there are countless beautiful ways to feel connected to something bigger than ourselves. Whether it’s faith, spirituality, manifestation, meditation, nature, or simply kindness and love, I honor and celebrate whatever path feels true and uplifting to you, so long as it brings light rather than harm. I’m always curious and open to learning about the practices and beliefs that ground and inspire the people around me.
How do you hold space for others?
I hold space with gentle presence, deep listening, and the quiet assurance that nothing you bring is too much, too messy, or too small. I’ll reflect back what I hear without judgment, offer perspective when it feels helpful, and sit beside you in the parts that are hard to name. My role is to keep the space safe, grounded, and kind so you can hear your own wisdom, breathe a little easier, and remember you’re not alone.
What should I know about working together?
I encourage clients to have a willingness to show up and engage in the process in whatever way feels right for them. In art therapy, there’s no need to be “good” at art, it’s about expression, not perfection. I simply ask that you stay open to exploring your thoughts and emotions, whether through words, images, or quiet reflection.
Do you take notes during session?
Yes, I do. You might see me write a few notes, since I want to be able to keep track of and revisit certain themes and patterns, and help create the best possible treatment plan for you. Notes are a tool for me as your counsellor to make sure I remember essential information and provide the best care I can.
A Summary of the Modalities I Call Upon During Sessions
The approaches we use will unfold based on what feels supportive and meaningful for you.
Person-Centered
This approach focuses on creating a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental environment where you can show up exactly as you are. You lead the way, and I follow your pace, supporting you as you uncover your own insights and strengths.
Art Therapy
A creative therapeutic process that uses art-making to explore emotions, experiences, and meanings that might be difficult to put into words. You don’t need any art experience. It’s about expression, not perfection.
Strengths-Based
An empowering approach that highlights your inner resources, resilience, and abilities. Rather than focusing only on what feels hard, we look at what’s already strong and use that foundation to support growth and healing.
ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)
A mindfulness-based approach that helps you make room for difficult thoughts or feelings instead of fighting them. ACT supports you in connecting to your values and taking gentle, meaningful steps toward the life you want.
IFS (Internal Family Systems)
A therapeutic approach that views the mind as having different “parts,” each trying to protect or help you in its own way. By getting to know these parts with compassion and curiosity, you can understand yourself more deeply and move toward greater inner harmony.
What should I know before beginning this work together?
Therapy with me is a space for honesty, curiosity, and self-compassion, and it’s completely okay to arrive with uncertainty or hesitation. My role is to walk alongside you, offering support and guidance as we make sense of things together. What matters most is your commitment to yourself and your openness to growth, even in small, gentle steps. I look forward to meeting you soon.
